Viral Thakker

“Our professors were eminent in their own fields and made the classes come alive with their own personal experiences,” says alumnus Viral Thakker.

Viral Thakker, a 1998 graduate of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, has forged a career that blends technological innovation with global sustainability. As the partner and leader of the South Asia Sustainability and Climate Strategic Growth Offering practice at Deloitte, Thakker’s journey has spanned the private and public sectors, allowing him to work with clients and companies throughout the world.

After earning his Master of Science in Engineering Management at USC, Thakker began his career at KPMG in Los Angeles and was later seconded to India, where he became a partner and head of the Global Business Services practice in 2008. His ability to manage complex business challenges across borders ultimately led to an offer from Deloitte, where he holds an additional appointment as the global leader of Sustainability Technology and Transformation.

With an educational experience rooted in diversity, cross-cultural exchange and thoughtful collaboration, Thakker has been able to chart progressive solutions that seek to address some of the most pressing climate challenges of our time.

USC’s Lasting Influence

Reflecting on his time at USC, Thakker credits much of his career success to the rigorous and practical education he received. Classes covering decision theory, knowledge management, systems engineering and quality management felt “tailor-made” for his career in consulting. He highlighted one standout class on quality management, which was taught by a former test pilot whose real-world experience brought the subject to life.

“These [courses] were enriched further because our professors were eminent in their own fields and made the classes come alive with their own personal experiences,” he said in an interview with the USC India Office

Along with the deeply applicable curriculum, Thakker appreciated his exposure to a gamut of cultures and student traditions at USC, which has served him well in a global career.

“The extracurricular activities, class projects, research and on-campus jobs provided me the opportunity to spend time with fellow Trojans of different backgrounds and to learn about and appreciate their perspectives and stories … I was impressed at the vibrant student body with very diverse backgrounds,” Thakker said.

He also found a sense of home by participating in the university’s Trojan cricket club and Diwali celebrations, connecting with students from India, “the U.S. and many parts of the world.”

Advice for Future Trojans

For prospective students, Thakker’s advice is simple: USC is the ideal place for those looking to shape the future. From its pioneering role in internet technology to its advanced research in computing, USC is at the cutting edge of research and innovation. The extensive facilities and resources available to students only add to the experience, making it an institution where students can thrive both academically and personally.

As evidenced, Thakker’s journey from his master’s program to a global leadership role at Deloitte reflects that same vision — one of continuous growth and forward-thinking.
